ScarWork™: A Non-Invasive Approach to Scar Treatment

ScarWork is a specialised, non-invasive technique developed by Sharon Wheeler.

Its objective is to reintegrate scar tissue into the three-dimensional fascial network, potentially relieving persistent pain or stiffness that may return, even after long attempts with other therapies. A scar and the adhesions could be the underlying issue.

Scars and adhesions can arise from various circumstances, such as surgery, an accident, or exploratory procedures. Each of these situations creates scar tissue that distorts the fascia, leading to signs and symptoms that may manifest quickly or gradually over the years. When the fascia is distorted by adhesions, it can create a pulling effect throughout the body, resulting in strain patterns that may alter your posture or limit mobility.

ScarWork vs. Scar Therapy

While both ScarWork and Scar Therapy can treat scars, whether new or old, there is a distinct difference in their approach.

Scar Therapy commonly uses tools, massage, and applies topicals to manage the scar. In contrast, ScarWork only uses gentle hand techniques that have a lasting effect on the scar and the surrounding tissue, easing the problems that arise from it. The sessions are also very relaxing and free of discomfort.

Causes of Scars and Adhesions

They develop due to many medical procedures and may lead to ongoing problems in areas of the body far from the original scar.

Here are some situations, along with signs and symptoms, where ScarWork can prove to be especially beneficial:

• Epidurals – hip and back pain
• C-Section – feel disjointed, back, hip, or leg pain
• Keyhole surgery – surrounding and distal to the incision
• Burns (well healed) – surrounding and distal to the scar
• Abdominoplasty – abdomen, back pain
• Hip replacement – glute slump, tightness, back and hip pain
• Knee replacement – tightness, aching, leg pains

Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to work with individuals who have keloid scars or cancer patients who have been in remission for less than five years, unless we receive written permission from your oncologist.

Treatments

The primary aim of ScarWork treatments is to restore your sense of wholeness and enhance your quality of life by helping to reintegrate both deep and superficial tissue that may be causing pain and restriction.

During your initial session, the number of required treatments will be discussed. The following sessions are usually scheduled two to three weeks apart to allow the internal adjustments to take effect after each treatment.

Once we reach a satisfactory outcome, you may not require further treatments for many years, if at all.

While the appearance of the surface scar may change as a result of the surrounding tissue softening, the central focus remains on your overall well-being and the alleviation of the discomfort you were experiencing.
