How does Counselling/Psychotherapy work?
I provide a safe, supportive, confidential and non-judgmental place for you to explore, understand and work through problems and difficulties to foster a greater sense of wellbeing.
As a psychodynamic practitioner, I work with an emphasis on relationship – how we relate to ourselves and others. This can be affected by our early experiences and may link to symptoms of depression and anxiety. Sometimes we find it hard to connect to, and work through, difficult and painful feelings and we form defences to help us cope and manage them – not all of these defences are helpful.
My approach will encourage you to understand underlying emotional conflicts and to develop new ways of coping with difficulties, to find meaning and where appropriate, make changes in your life.
Gaining insight into the nature of your difficulties can bring enormous relief as you begin to address unhelpful, often negative patterns of thinking and feeling.
My work draws on ideas from Jungian Psychology, CBT and Compassion-Focused Therapy as well as being informed by my passion for, and background in, classical music.
We would start with an introductory session to give you the chance to see if therapy might work for you; the session involves no commitment beyond this first meeting. Initially, we would explore what you wish to get out of counselling/psychotherapy and how we could do this together. The relationship between the individual and the therapist is of paramount importance in therapy.
