“The clue to understanding their behaviour is that they are striving, in the only ways that they perceive as available to them, to move toward growth, toward becoming.” (Carl R. Rogers)
I am an integrative child and adolescent counsellor. I draw on various psychological counselling modalities to address the needs of the whole person (person-centred). I believe in cultivating an environment of warmth and acceptance for each client. I often use creative techniques such as sand, various games and drama therapies in conjunction with child development knowledge. The aim is to help the client feel comfortable as well as enabling him/her to access deeper emotions in the “hidden parts” of the self. I also incorporate solution-focused approaches (CBT/ACT) dependent on what I believe may be helpful for the young person. Time and again, I have seen how through the trust built in the counselling relationship, a young person can develop the confidence and self-belief to move forward in an ever-changing world. I encourage each client to deepen their thinking and increases their self-awareness. This leads to improvement in their mental well-being.
I have 20 years of experience working with children and young people. I started as an English and Drama teacher and for the last 4 years I have been a counsellor. I have experience in dealing with the following: anxiety, family relationships, bereavement, domestic violence, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, bullying, self-harm, suicidal ideation, depression, low self-esteem, gender identity, anger, gaming, Covid-19 related issues and OCD.
I trained with Place2be, University of East London (PGDip in Counselling Children and Adolescents in Schools). I am also a registered member with the BACP.
The first session will be an assessment to gain information about the young person’s background and presenting problems as well as goals. Parents are welcome to feed into this by means of a phone call beforehand.
Although the sessions are strictly confidential, I am happy to give a general update to parents about how things are going at periodic intervals.
£55-£65 per session depending on individual circumstances.
Sessions last 45-50mins
